What Is Strategic Planning - SOAR Framework

SOAR highlighted

The webcast discusses strategic planning using the SOAR framework with Jenna Hendricks, an experienced change management practitioner and former executive at John Deere. Traditionally, strategic planning in large corporations, like John Deere, focuses heavily on financial planning to meet stockholder expectations. However, Hendricks emphasizes the need to integrate innovation and engagement into strategic planning. The SOAR framework (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results) is designed to engage stakeholders at all levels in the strategic planning process. Unlike the traditional SWOT analysis which involves only a select few, the SOAR framework involves larger groups (up to 75 people) in identifying strengths, exploring opportunities, setting aspirations, and defining metrics for success. This approach fosters innovation and enthusiasm by tapping into the participants' spirit and encouraging them to reflect on their proud achievements and future aspirations. Hendricks provided examples of implementing the SOAR framework across different divisions at John Deere, including the HR and Legal departments, and its application at project levels where it involves understanding team strengths and individual aspirations. The SOAR framework is versatile and has been successfully applied in various organizational cultures, including heavy unionized environments, demonstrating its adaptability. Hendricks also highlights the importance of alignment in strategic planning and the value of iterative processes in translating broad organizational strategies into actionable plans at different organizational levels. This iterative process ensures that strategic goals remain aligned and adaptable to changing circumstances. Ultimately, the SOAR framework helps organizations build alignment, encourage innovation, and shorten the cycle time for implementing new projects by involving a wide range of stakeholders in the strategic planning process. Click here to watch the video
