What is Community Engagement and Why is it an Important Approach?

The UNICEF SBC Guidance article defines community engagement as a collaborative approach for various groups, including community leaders, traditional institutions, and even government officials, to actively participate in tackling issues that impact their lives. It goes beyond simply informing people and stresses co-designing solutions and empowering communities to take ownership. This approach strengthens relationships, builds trust, and fosters long-term sustainability of solutions. Community engagement isn't a one-size-fits-all strategy. The level of involvement can range from offering advice to undertaking project delivery.
